Operational Context Target File 271-4_33 documents Operation No. 192/21S/M, a tactical saturation strike executed on the afternoon of 10th April 1945. This mission occurred during the second day of the main Allied spring offensive in Italy, Operation Grapeshot. The strategic objective was the neutralization of an enemy Gun area measuring 1600 x 400 metres near Imola (Map Ref: Sheet 88 - IMOLA, pp M. 226317). This sector was of critical importance as Allied forces pushed to break the German 10th Army’s (10. Armee) defensive lines along the Santerno River. By deploying 2,304 fragmentation bombs, the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces (MAAF) sought to suppress Axis artillery that was contesting the Eighth Army’s bridgeheads. The 12 Marauder III aircraft, flying in three boxes of four, achieved high tactical success, with all boxes straddling the briefed area. This concentrated bombardment provided direct support to the ground troops by degrading the tactical reserves and artillery support of Heeresgruppe C. Encountering only "slight inaccurate" heavy anti-aircraft fire, the formation maintained operational integrity, further facilitating the terminal collapse of Axis resistance in the Argenta Gap sector. 34
