S.I.O: Squadron Intelligence Officer, Capt. S.L. Boshoff. Operational Context Target File 271-4_46 documents Operation No. 200/21S/M, a kinetic strike executed on 15th April 1945 against a German troop concentration East of Medicina. This raid was a high-priority tactical support mission conducted during the peak of Operation Grapeshot, the final Allied spring offensive in Italy. The strategic importance of Medicina lay in its position as a defensive anchor for the German 1st Fallschirmjäger (Parachute) Division and units of the 26th Panzer Division. These Axis formations were attempting to hold the line along the Gaiana River to delay the British Eighth Army's advance toward Bologna and the Po River. By striking the concentration east of the town (Map Ref: Sheet 88 - IMOLA, M.125458), 21 Squadron sought to degrade the tactical reserves and artillery support of Heeresgruppe C. The 12 Marauder III aircraft achieved significant structural and personnel damage. While the lead box suffered a slight undershoot, its concentrated pattern destroyed a cluster of buildings on the southern target edge. The second and third boxes successfully straddled the western half of the target zone. The resulting fires and explosions, visible at the strike time of 18:52 hrs, directly contributed to the breakthrough by New Zealand and British ground units, who captured Medicina the following day, April 16. Despite "moderate inaccurate" H.A.A., the formation maintained integrity, though one aircraft was forced to bring its ordnance back due to internal communication failure. 47
