This mission occurred during the peak of Operation Grapeshot, the final Allied spring offensive in Italy. The strategic objective was the neutralization of Motor Transport (M/T) and Mobile Reserves of the 29th Panzergrenadier Division situated two miles southeast of Porto Maggiore (Map Ref: Sheet 76 - FERRARA).
