12 Balts off from BIFERNO at 1525 hrs to attack TWO BRIDGES at
G258688 (near SUBIACO), intention being to create a road block.
Formation set course at 1542 and on arrival in target area found
primary target obscured by cloud at 9000', but followed road and
railway N.W. along the ANIENE RIVER VALLEY searching for an
alternative target. First box attacked a road, rail and river
junction with small siding at G214729, straddling target with a
300 yd stick. Second box carried on and bombed two bridges
2000 yds beyond, a very concentrated pattern scoring numerous D/Hs
on both bridges. Six Spitfires provided close escort from VENAFRO
and return. No enemy opposition. All A/c down by 1720 hrs.
