Operational Context The "NIL" return for OPREP No. 904, covering the period ending 2100 hours on 10 January 1945, represents a continuous streak of operational grounding for 21 Squadron SAAF during the opening ten days of 1945. During this phase of the Italian Campaign, the strategic mandate of the Mediterranean Allied Tactical Air Force (MATAF) was "Operation Bingo"—the systematic logistical strangulation of German Army Group C. The objective was the isolation of the front lines by destroying rail infrastructure in Northern Italy and the Balkans, such as the bridges at Celje and the junctions at Castelfranco Veneto. The inactivity on 10 January was dictated by the extreme winter conditions of 1944-1945.
