Operational Context Target File 271-4_42 documents Operation No. 198/21S/M, a tactical strike executed on the afternoon of 14th April 1945 against enemy troop concentrations near Argenta. This mission occurred during the terminal phase of the Allied spring offensive, Operation Grapeshot. The location of Argenta was of paramount strategic importance as the linchpin of the Argenta Gap, a narrow strip of dry land between the Comacchio Lagoon and the flooded plains of the Reno River. The German 10th Army (10. Armee) had heavily fortified this sector to prevent the Eighth Army from breaking out into the Po Valley. By deploying 12 Marauder III aircraft with fragmentation ordnance, the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces (MAAF) sought to shatter German tactical reserves contesting the Allied advance. The mission faced significant execution challenges. The first box suffered a 450-yard undershoot, and the third box experienced a 300-yard lateral error. Only the second box successfully placed 60% of its bombs within the target area. One aircraft failed to bomb entirely due to mechanical difficulty during the "turn on" phase and was forced to jettison its ordnance at sea. Despite these errors, the lack of enemy opposition (Nil flak/fighters) allowed the formation to maintain terminal pressure on Heeresgruppe C during the decisive Allied breakthrough toward the Po River. 43
