Time of Origin. Operational Context Operational Report (OPREP) No. 284, dated 3 May 1943, records a "Nil" return for all tactical categories (A through K) for 21 Squadron SAAF. This represents the third consecutive day of operational inactivity for the squadron's Martin Baltimore formations at the commencement of May. Strategically, this pause in medium-bombing sorties coincides with the final positioning phase for Operation Strike, the decisive Allied offensive designed to capture Tunis and Bizerte. Following the intense interdiction missions of late April, which focused on suppressing Axis gun positions and motor transport (MT) along the Enfidaville line and the Cap Bon peninsula, the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces (MAAF) utilized this period for technical regrouping. At the unit's forward base at El Djem Main, the 582 personnel prioritized maintenance to sustain the 90.2% serviceability rate achieved during the previous month's 252 sorties. Administrative records indicate this time was also utilized for logistical transitions, including the final return of winter equipment to the Quartermaster stores.
