Operational Context Target File 271-4_62 documents Operation No. 210/21S/M, a precision interdiction strike executed on the morning of 21st April 1945. The target was the Pontoon Ferry Approaches on the Po River north of Ferrara (Map Ref: Sheet 76 - FERRARA, pp L.979964). This mission occurred at the peak of the Allied spring offensive, Operation Grapeshot. The strategic importance of this location cannot be overstated. By April 21, the German 10th and 14th Armies were in full retreat toward the Po River after the collapse of their defensive lines at the Argenta Gap and Bologna. Ferry sites north of Ferrara were the only remaining escape routes for Axis personnel and equipment, as the primary permanent bridges had been destroyed by previous Allied air operations. The 12 Marauder III aircraft targeted the approaches with a mix of instantaneous and 12-hour delay fused demolition bombs to maximize logistical disruption. While the first and third boxes successfully covered the target area, technical failure of the lead bombsight in the second box resulted in a 150-yard lateral error. Despite this, direct hits were confirmed on buildings in the target vicinity. The formation encountered accurate, intense H.A.A., resulting in four aircraft sustaining Category I damage. This mission directly contributed to the "bottlenecking" of retreating German forces, ensuring they were caught south of the river by the advancing Eighth Army, leading to the final total collapse of Heeresgruppe C. 63
