GUN POSITIONS near GENAZZANO (G200579 & G165578) airborne at 1526 hrs. Attack took place at 1632 Hrs from 12500' on a course of 125°. Owing to patches of cloud and impaired visibility in target area, the leader went for the briefed target for the second box, and scored a good pattern from G161579 to G166575, straddling road and railway line. The second box also attacked the same area, but the leaders bombs hung up and his Vic did not bomb. The second Vic of the second box dropped a stick from G171581 to G178576 with many direct hits on the road. The remaining three A/c bombed a road near PRATOLA on the way back from 12000' on a course of 155° at 1724 Hrs, without results. H.A.A. slight inaccurate from PALESTRINA & VALMONTONE. 5/10th Cu & Strata Cu in target area 8000' tops, visibility hazy. All A/c landed by 1731 Hrs. Transcriber's Historical & Tactical Notes: * Closing the Ring on Rome (Genazzano & Valmontone): * Context: This mission on May 29th, 1944, targeted Genazzano, situated just southeast of Palestrina and Valmontone. At this exact moment, the US Fifth Army was pushing desperately to cut Highway 6 at Valmontone to trap the retreating German 10th Army before they could escape past Rome. The mention of flak from "PALESTRINA & VALMONTONE" confirms the squadron was operating directly over the primary axis of the German retreat. * Tactical Flexibility: Faced with "impaired visibility," the flight leader (Lt. Col. Jandrell) made the command decision to switch targets in the air ("leader went for the briefed target for the second box"). This adaptability was crucial in the fluid battlespace south of Rome. * Formation Tactics and Failures: * The "Vic" Failure: The report notes, "the leaders bombs hung up and his Vic did not bomb.".
