MAP ITALY 1,100,000 pp C 471889 SHEET NO. 14 (PONTEBBA). OPERATION NO. 167/21S/M. A. : 10 Marauders airborne from JESI L/G between 1245 and 1616 hours to bomb PONTEBBA M/Y at pp C 471889. After R/V at PORTO CORSINI with 4 Spitfires at 1344 hrs. the formation set course for target and bombed at 1434 hrs. from 10,000 - 11,500'. Bombs from first box fell with left lateral error and slight overshoot, scoring no hits in target area. The second box bombed with a stick which straddled the centre of the target, 75 percent of the bombs falling on the target, and causing explosions and fires. Stick from third box started at extreme western tip of M/Y and finished at bridge outside target, falling with slight overshoot. Hits on railway line and buildings south of the line. There was slight inaccurate H.A.A. from GORIZIA area. General weather was fair with some medium and high cloud. Visibility was fair in slight haze. 2 Marauders airborne between 1302 and 1626 to bomb gun positions defending PONTEBBA flew with 2 A/C from 30 Squadron and dropped a load of fragmentation clusters at 1443 hours from 11,000'. One A/C had undershoot and right lateral error. The other bombed 3 miles south of briefed pinpoint, straddling a railway bridge at C 4758. Approx. 10 min. before bombing both 30 Squadron A/C were lost. Cause unknown, but slight collision in mid - air presumed. Tail plane seen to fall off one A/C.
