Operational Context Target File 271-4_40 documents Operation No. 197/21S/M, a tactical saturation strike executed on the afternoon of 13th April 1945. This mission took place during the critical opening week of Operation Grapeshot, the final Allied spring offensive in Italy. Following the morning's aborted mission (Operation 196) due to cloud cover, this afternoon strike aimed to maintain pressure on the Axis defenses. The strategic objective was a defended area near Argenta (Map Ref: Sheet 88 - IMOLA). Argenta was of paramount importance as the linchpin of the Argenta Gap, a narrow strip of dry land between the Comacchio Lagoon and the flooded plains of the Reno River. The German 10th Army (10. Armee) had heavily fortified this sector to prevent the Eighth Army from breaking out into the Po Valley.
