Originally dispatched to attack the Pontebba Marshalling Yards, the formation was diverted mid-mission to target the Monfalcone Marshalling Yards at Gorizia. This shift reflects the fluid tactical environment during the final week of the Italian Campaign as Allied ground forces broke out into the Po Valley and the Venetian Plain. The strategic importance of the Gorizia/Monfalcone sector lay in its role as a critical logistical funnel for Heeresgruppe C forces attempting to retreat toward the Austrian border and the "Ljubljana Gap". By April 25, the German front in Italy was in total collapse; interdicting these rail hubs was essential to prevent Axis personnel and heavy equipment from regrouping or escaping the Allied advance. The 8 Marauder III aircraft, escorted by 4 Mustangs, achieved significant structural results. After an initial dummy run to ensure accuracy, the first box successfully straddled the yards with 80% bomb placement, resulting in three observed large explosions. While the second box overshot by 200 yards into open country, the precision of the first box significantly degraded the rail capacity at Gorizia.
