S.I.O: Squadron Intelligence Officer, Capt. S.L. Boshoff. Operational Context Target File 271-4_39 documents Operation No. 196/21S/M, a tactical support sortie aborted on the morning of 13th April 1945. This mission took place during the critical opening week of Operation Grapeshot, the final Allied spring offensive in Italy. The strategic objective was an enemy defensive area near Argenta (Map Ref: Sheet 88 - IMOLA). Argenta was of paramount importance as the linchpin of the Argenta Gap, a narrow strip of dry land between the Comacchio Lagoon and the flooded plains of the Reno River. The German 10th Army (10. Armee) had heavily fortified this sector to prevent the Eighth Army from breaking out into the Po Valley. The deployment of saturation levels of fragmentation bombs (2,304 x 20 lbs) indicates a mission intended to provide direct battlefield support to British and South African ground forces attempting to force the gap. However, execution was prohibited by "multi layers of cloud" in the target area, which prevented the 12 Marauder III aircraft from acquiring the target visually.
