Time of Origin. Operational Context Operational Report (OPREP) No. 282, dated 1 May 1943, records a "Nil" return for all tactical and operational categories for 21 Squadron SAAF. This administrative document marks the transition into the final month of the Tunisian Campaign, following a month of high-intensity strikes where the squadron conducted 252 sorties and dropped 1,488 bombs. Strategically, the lack of sorties on this date reflects a brief operational pause as the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces (MAAF) regrouped for Operation Strike, the final Allied assault to capture Tunis and Bizerte. By 1 May 1943, the Axis bridgehead was severely constricted, with the German 90th Light Division and Italian First Army compressed into the Cap Bon peninsula. The "Nil" return also coincides with logistical and personnel reorganizations within the unit. At El Djem Main, the squadron was processing the return of winter equipment to the Quartermaster stores and managing the rotation of experienced flight leaders, such as the recent transfer of Major Schravesande to 55 Squadron. This administrative consolidation was a necessary prerequisite for maintaining the 90.2% serviceability rate of the unit's 18 Martin Baltimore aircraft as they prepared to deliver the final weight of tactical air power required to force the total collapse of Axis resistance in North Africa. 106 Phase 1: Verification & Extraction Identity Check: 2 May 43.
