Operational Context The mission on 28 April 1943 occurred during the final, high-attrition stage of the Tunisian Campaign, specifically as part of Operation Vulcan. Following the Allied breakthrough at the Akarit Line, Axis forces were compressed into the northeastern Cap Bon peninsula, with the British Eighth Army applying pressure from the south and the British First Army from the west. Strategically, the 18 Martin Baltimores of 21 Squadron SAAF were tasked with suppressing Axis gun positions in a specific sector (Square P 25-27). However, the tactical execution was severely compromised by seasonal weather. The 10/10 cloud cover and rain prevented the formation from identifying the primary targets, forcing them to jettison their 108 General Purpose bombs over an alternative coordinate area (K 20-15). Despite the lack of visibility, the Axis defensive screen remained highly effective. The formation encountered intense Light Anti-Aircraft (LAA) and small arms fire, as well as accurate Heavy Anti-Aircraft (HAA) fire from Bou Ficha (Bouficha) and Square P 39. The result was significant operational damage: nine aircraft were slightly holed, and one aircraft sustained Category II damage.
