With a load of 40 lb Frag. bombs, formation set course at 1628 and attacked individually by boxes at about 1700 hrs from 12000' on a course of approx 300°. Pattern of 1st box resulted in a left line error of about 3-400 yds from M868973-864977. Second box straddled target with a long pattern, with main concentration of bombs on pinpoint briefed -- M905972 - 865980. 8 x 40 bombs hung-up and brought back. Area cover provided. No enemy opposition. All A/c down by 1748. Weather: Clear over target, visibility hazy. Transcriber's Historical & Tactical Notes: * Battle for the Gustav Line Flank (Formia): * Strategic Context: The target was a massive concentration of "17 guns at M 90974 (3 miles N.E. of FORMIA)". Formia sits on the coast at the extreme western end of the Gustav Line. By May 15th, 1944 (the date of this raid), the American II Corps (specifically the 85th and 88th Divisions) had just launched their offensive to break out of the Minturno bridgehead and push towards Formia. * Counter-Battery Fire: Attacking a 17-gun battery indicates a high-priority suppression mission. These German guns would have been shelling the American infantry advancing through the Aurunci Mountains. Silencing them was critical for the breakthrough along the coast. * Tactical Execution: * Mixed Accuracy: The first box suffered a significant navigation or sighting error, missing by "3-400 yds... left line error". However, the second box saved the mission, "straddled target... with main concentration of bombs on pinpoint briefed."
