They set course from PENNA POINT at 1854 hrs following 12 Balts of 223 Sqdn. and with fighter escort. 9/10th cumulus 9000' tops hampered location of target and after searching for a gap the formation attacked at 1927 hrs from 13000' on a course of 060°. Lateral error to the left occured, bombs falling on the side of the mountains from G877992 to G883996. No results are claimed. No movements observed. No enemy opposition. All A/c landed by 2014 hrs. Transcriber's Historical & Tactical Notes: * Strategic Interdiction (Popoli): * The Target: The mission targeted a road "N.E. of POPOLI". Popoli is a critical town in the Abruzzo region, located at the junction of the Aterno-Pescara and Sagittario valleys. The main road running through it (State Road 5, Via Tiburtina Valeria) was a vital artery for German forces moving between Rome and the Adriatic coast. * Objective: The explicit goal was "creating a road block." By dropping heavy ordnance on the mountain roads, the Allies aimed to trap German vehicles in the valleys or force them onto secondary tracks, exposing them to strafing fighters. * Ordnance (Time-Delay Fuses): * Area Denial: The fuse settings listed in section F are highly significant. While some bombs used standard impact fuses, others were set for "6 Hour delay" and "12 Hour delay". * Tactical Purpose: Dropping bombs with long-delay fuses turned the road block into a minefield. German engineers attempting to clear the landslide or repair the crater during the night would be killed when the bombs detonated hours after the air raid. This tactic effectively closed the road for a much longer period than the physical damage alone would achieve. * Navigation and Terrain: * Penna Point: The formation "set course from PENNA POINT".
