A : 12 Marauders (4-4-4) airborne from Jesi L/G between 0745 - 0940hrs.to attack Pillboxes in an area near PORTO MAGGIORE, with500 and 250 demo fused bombs. Formation bombed at 0855 hrs.on a course of appr. 300° from 12000'. The first and thirdboxes; all bombs in target area, direct hits on buildingsand roads. The second box had an undershoot with over50% of bombs in target area. No enemy opposition. This mission occurred during the decisive breakthrough phase of Operation Grapeshot, the final Allied spring offensive in Italy. The strategic importance of Porto Maggiore centered on its role as a vital road and rail junction protecting the southern approaches to Ferrara. As the Eighth Army pushed through the Argenta Gap, the German 10th Army (10. Armee) utilized reinforced concrete pillboxes and fortified buildings to anchor their defensive lines and delay the Allied advance. By striking these specific tactical obstacles with heavy demolition (GP) bombs, 21 Squadron sought to clear the path for Allied ground forces. The 12 Marauder III aircraft achieved high tactical precision. The first and third boxes successfully placed all ordnance within the target area, scoring direct hits on buildings and the road network supporting the defensive line. The second box, despite an undershoot, still delivered 50% of its payload into the designated zone. The absence of enemy opposition (Nil flak/fighters) allowed the formation to maintain terminal pressure on the Axis defenses. These operations directly facilitated the Eighth Army's surge toward the Po River, which ultimately resulted in the total logistical collapse of Heeresgruppe C. 55
