12 Baltimores airborne at 0910 to attack a GUN AREA 3 miles South of ANCONA. Formation set course from PESCARA at 0920 and bombed from 12000' on a course of 340º at 0950 hrs. Both boxes, bombing line astern, straddled area as briefed with a long pattern through centre. Several explosions and fires with white smoke visible 40 miles away. One A/c developed engine trouble approaching target, broke formation and brought back bomb load. Moderate accurate H/A/A from target area (2 A/c holed). Fighter cover provided. Weather: Target clear, but visibility hazy. All A/c down by 1045 hrs.
