12 Baltimores airborne from BIFERNO at 1109 Hrs to bomb a Railway Stn at A550509 near ORVIETO in which 250 RR trucks were reported, alternatively railway bridge at A561486. After R/v with 12 Baltimores of 223 Sqdn and a close escort of 16 Spitfires they set course from PENNA POINT at 1203 Hrs, 21 Sqdn leading. Due to navigational error the leader turned towards target at A5055 instead of A7065. Realising his mistake too late he decided to bomb Rail bridge at A502402. Attack took place at 1245 Hrs from 11500' on a course of 330º. The whole formation overshot with lateral error to the left. One 500 lb bomb hung-up and was brought back. NO enemy opposition. Weather clear in target area but visibility impaired by ground haze. All a/c returned by 1345 Hrs.
