APPENDIX "AA"55SQUADRON ROUTINE ORDERS. NO. 68/44. 21 SQUADRON, S.A.A.F.ByLT. COL. A.C. JANDRELL, D.F.C.Officer Commanding,21 Squadron, S.A.A.F.18th July, 1944.Para. 253. ARMS.The attention of all ranks is drawn to the follow-ing order :-Under no circumstances whatsoever will any targetpractice with fire arms be indulged in. All rifles whetherprivately owned or otherwise will be handed in to theArmoury immediately. All other ranks who are in possessionof revolvers, whether privately owned or otherwise will handthem in to the Armoury immediately, and a receipt obtainedfor same.Para. 254. MAIL.In future all Other Ranks' letters will be subjectto the same censorship regulations as the ordinary greenenvelopes. They will not be Unit censored. Officers willcontinue to frank their own letters as at present.Where ordinary letters are used the green envelopecertificate - "I certify on my honour that the contents ofthis envelope refer to nothing but private and family matters"-must be written on the back of the envelope by the sender andsigned.Para. 255 PREVENTION OF ROAD ACCIDENTS.The following extract from A.M.O. A.1178/42 isreproduced below for compliance by all personnel :"1. The number of road accidents to service personnelin this theatre is still large. The risk of road accidentswill be reduced if the following rules are observed :-(i) Never walk along the carriageway where thereis a pavement or suitable footpath. If there is no footpath,it is generally better to walk on the left of the carriage-way so as to face the oncoming traffic.(ii) When, for any reason, walking on the carriage-way is unavoidable, pedestrians should not be more than twoabreast and should walk as close as possible to the side ofthe carriageway, so that they may have a reasonable opportun-ity of avoiding oncoming traffic.(iii) Personnel are warned against stepping out infront of a car in the black-out with a view to getting a lift.The driver's field of vision is so limited that personnelexpose themselves to serious risk of being run down by thecar they attempt to stop.(C.R.O. Serial 37, Para. 5 d.d. 24.6.44).Para. 256. LOSS OF STORES, EQUIPMENT, CLOTHING AND NECESSARIES, ETC. DUETO NEGLIGENCE OR THEFT.The attention of all ranks is directed to the increas-ing number of losses of stores, equipment, clothing andnecessaries, etc. due to either negligence or theft.It is the duty of every officer and airman to protectfrom loss everything placed in his charge or issued to himfor his use.Everyone must play his part in reducing the numberof thefts both from other personnel and from units."Scrounging", "lifting" and "winning" articles of personalequipment or government property are merely forms of dishon-esty, the plain English for which is theft.Continued/
