21 Squadron War Diary

Biferno, Italy

The weather was extremely wet; towards the evening the rain increased causing anxiety to fellows in the lower part of the camp. Nil operations.W.O. Mackay, a popular gunner, left for BARI by Anson aircraft on his return to the Union.

Operational Conditions (The "Wash Out" at Campomarino):

S.A.A.F.I. (South African Air Force Institute): This is the South African equivalent of the British NAAFI—an organization providing canteen and recreational services to the troops. The flooding of the SAAFI tent meant a loss of cigarettes, snacks, and a dry place to socialize, hitting morale hard.
