Glossary of Terms
* 21 SQUADRON S.A.A.F.: No. 21 Squadron, South African Air Force. In June 1945, the unit had ceased combat operations and relocated to the Udine district to perform transport and occupational duties.

Target File 271-6_9 consists of two archival photographs documenting a formal military ceremony held at Rivolto Airfield on 5th June 1945. This event, cataloged as Appendix "B", marks the official presentation of the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.) to Commandant G.N. Dieu of the Belgian Air Force, who was attached to No. 21 Squadron SAAF.
The strategic significance of this ceremony lies in its timing and location. By June 1945, the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces (MAAF) had completed the destruction of the German logistical network in Italy, and the focus had shifted to the occupation of Northeastern Italy and the border regions with Austria and Yugoslavia. The presentation was conducted by Air Vice Marshal Robert Foster, the A.O.C. of the Desert Air Force, signifying the high-level recognition of the SAAF's contribution to the victory.
The top photograph shows the official party, including Lt. Col. D. Ord (who read the citation), assembled in front of a Martin Marauder III aircraft, which provides a symbolic backdrop for the award.
