OPERATION No. 148/21S/M.

A : 11 Marauders Airborne at Jesi L/G at 0842 to attack ROVIGO M/Yards
at G.254120 and two Marauders with one of 30 Squadron airborne at
0810 hrs. to attack heavy flak positions consisting of two 6 Gun
Sites at G. 261132 and 261138. The formation A/c carried Bombloads
of 6x500 and 4x250 Frag., and the Anti Flak A/C each carried 192
20 Lbs. Frag. The formation, which had area cover by 12 Spits
bombed at 0940 Hrs. from 12000' to 12500'. Bombs from 1st Box fell
with lateral error to the left from G.253120 - 251124, scoring
a D/H on road at G.253120. 2nd Box bombed with right lateral error
from G. 257120 - 256125. D/H's on buildings at G.256125. 3rd Box
bombed from G.254125 - 252127 on course of 320°, bombs falling
along either side of the road with one direct hit on road at
G.252125. One A/C returned early with engine trouble and brought
all bombs back. Another brought back half a bombload which
hung-up. Window and pamphlets were dropped before and after target.
Slight fairly accurate H/A/A over target area holed two A/C slightly.
Visibility hazy over the target but no cloud above. All formation
A/C down by 1050 hrs.
First Anti Flak A/C straddled Gun position from which most concen-
trated fire had come at G. 261138, causing complete cessation of
fire. 2nd A/C had left error of about 100 yards. Window was
dropped over the target area. ( First Anti Flak Operation by this
Squadron)

Operational Context:
The mission of 20 February 1945 represents a tactical evolution for 21 Squadron SAAF during "Operation Bingo," the systematic campaign to isolate German forces in Italy. By targeting the Rovigo Marshalling Yards, the MAAF aimed to paralyze the rail networks supplying the German 10. Armee and 14. Armee holding the Gothic Line. Notably, this OPREP marks the squadron's first Anti Flak Operation, where specialized Marauders carrying 20-lb fragmentation bombs were utilized specifically to suppress German gun batteries (G. 261138) ahead of the main bombing force.
