Phase 2: Technical Expansion (The "Transcriber's Notes")
Glossary of Terms
* 21 SQUADRON S.A.A.F.: No. 21 Squadron, South African Air Force. During September 1941, this unit was a critical medium-bomber component of the Western Desert Air Force (WDAF).
* BA-BH (MARTIN BALTIMORE): A twin-engine medium bomber manufactured by Glenn L. Martin. While the squadron converted to this type in 1942, in late 1941 they were equipped with the Martin Maryland (e.g., Serial Nos. 1659, 1669, 1672), the Baltimore's direct technical and operational predecessor in SAAF service.
* GUNNER / OP. GUNNER: Aircrew responsible for defensive armament (typically Vickers K or Browning .303 machine guns). The Operator Gunner (OP. GUNNER) additionally managed the aircraft's wireless equipment and aerial cameras.
* H. Q. RAF. ME. S. I. O.: Headquarters, Royal Air Force Middle East, Squadron Intelligence Officer.
* MC/GP (MEDIUM CAPACITY / GENERAL PURPOSE): Standard Allied high-explosive demolition bombs. For this maritime strike, the formation carried a total of 18,000 lbs of 250 lb GP munitions.
* MET: Meteorological data. Weather conditions for this midday operation were recorded as "Fine," which allowed for the use of three aerial cameras to document bomb fall.
Operational Context
Target File 272_51 provides the comprehensive aircrew and airframe manifest for Operational Report No. 5, documenting the 21 Squadron SAAF contingent that participated in a combined strike against Axis shipping in Bardia Harbour on 28th September 1941. The strategic importance of Bardia centered on its role as a fortified logistical bottleneck; interdicting the maritime supply of German and Italian frontier forces was a primary objective of the Desert Air Force to weaken Rommel’s Panzergruppe Afrika ahead of Operation Crusader.
This mission followed the heavy combat of 27 September and utilized a massive formation of 18 Martin Marylands (9 from No. 12 Squadron leading 9 from No. 21 Squadron). The manifest identifies the 21 Squadron flight as being organized into three sub-flights, led by Maj. Britz in "X" 1659.
Execution Constraints
The mission was executed as a high-level horizontal bombing run at 12,000 feet. Unlike the previous day's interception by Luftwaffe fighters, this sortie was primarily constrained by "very heavy and accurate" anti-aircraft fire from Axis batteries located at coordinates G 25 and HG 2728.
The technical impact on the Marylands listed in this manifest was severe: every aircraft in the formation was hit, with more than 200 shrapnel holes counted across the squadron airframes. Specific technical failures included significant damage to fuel tanks and the hydraulic systems of four aircraft. Human attrition included one observer wounded. Despite the accurate ground fire, the technical reliability of the Martin airframes allowed the entire nine-aircraft flight to return to base after delivering a significant volume of ordnance near the target vessel. This manifest, signed by Intelligence Officer Lt. L. Saunders, stands as a record of the squadron's operational recovery and continued participation in high-risk strikes following the losses of the preceding 24 hours.
